Your child receives plenty of traditional instruction during the school day. There are the spelling tests, the vocabulary drills, the reading-comprehension quizzes . . . in short, while many teachers do put significant effort into making learning more interesting and accessible, a typical school day will almost always include a fair amount of cut-and-dried tasks. Knowing this, it's important that your child's tutoring sessions introduce a degree of pedagogical novelty. That's a fancy way of saying that it's perfectly OK to have fun during tutoring sessions — in fact, it's preferable!

Try to incorporate fun and whimsy into at least one of your weekly tutoring sessions. While you certainly should spend ample time reviewing concepts that your child needs for academic success, out-of-the-box activities can work wonders in maintaining your child's interest and engagement. And, you'll find that teaching tools exist in seemingly unlikely places! Here are some simple ways to make language-learning fun.

Break out the Mad Libs. This fill-in-the-blank game was a staple of family car trips for decades. But in addition to being entertaining, Mad Libs can also provide great practice with parts of speech, particularly for the second- to fourth-grade set. Playing Mad Libs requires kids to know what nouns, verbs, adjectives, and even adverbs are (and, as a bonus, there's no reason why they can't use an adverb like "squishily").

Sit down with Scrabble. Just as our bodies need exercise to stay agile and healthy, our brains need frequent workouts, too. Older students can put their brains through the paces by playing Scrabble. This classic game helps not only with vocabulary and word formation, but also with strategic thinking.

Boggle your minds. Sort of like an inverted Scrabble (or a three-D crossword puzzle), Boggle requires players to know plenty of words — and the longer those words are, the more points a player gets. Boggle gives students the opportunity to show off their vocabulary skills, think strategically, and accomplish a task within a given amount of time (handy practice for the timed tests they're sure to encounter in the classroom).

Chances are, you have some (or all) of these classic games in your home at this moment. If not, they're available at very affordable prices through sites like Amazon. “Assistive technology” refers to technology that is adapted or used to assist someone with a disability.

Shouldn’t all students with or without a diagnosis have multiple opportunities to use tools that help with learning? Every classroom has students who struggle in one or more major areas of learning but do not “qualify” for help.

“Universal Design for Learning” (UDL) means offering technology options to increase the functional abilities of all, not just the students who qualify for help through the (Individualized Education Plan) IEP process.

We should change learning environments to meet the needs of students rather than working to fit children into the learning environments. Some students need help in a single subject area. Maybe they want to boost their ACT score, or maybe they want to polish their writing skills in order to succeed in an English class. Other students, however, require a more holistic approach. While traditional tutoring addresses a student's needs in one subject area, educational therapy addresses how a student learns. If your child struggles in multiple academic areas and/or seems to dislike the school environment in general, you may want to look into educational therapy, which can be incredibly beneficial.

Just what is educational therapy? Basically, it's a thorough process that helps you and your child identify his strengths and weaknesses in the classroom. Homework issues are a common topic of discussion among parents. The goal of many parents is to simply learn strategies to support their child with issues that affect homework success while facilitating important life skills. Previous posts have discussed study, organization, time-management and academic skills. Today’s post will focus on strategies to help with four additional issues affecting homework success:

  • Perfectionism
  • Overload
  • Inflexibility
  • Anxiety

Perfectionism

  • Observe specific actions/issues that interfere with completion of homework and address one issue at a time with your child before doing homework.
  • Review the purpose of a task with your child before s/he begins work.
  • A timer and a specific amount of time to do a task helps some children who spend too much time with reviewing, revising, rewriting, or sitting and “thinking”
  • Sometimes simply asking the right question might help: “Can you finish your work in less time today and still do quality work?
  • Give less choices and/or make choices for your child, when appropriate.

Academic Issues

As discussed in a previous post, parents can help their children to become more responsible, independent and successful learners by facilitating good study, organization and time-management skills at home while working on weekly homework assignments.

Many children struggle with homework due to academic issues. Language and processing problems, writing mechanics, written expression and spelling difficulty are examples of academic issues that translate into homework issues at home.

Following are some strategies to try.

Language Processing Weakness

  • Additional one-on-one time with a parent who will be available as needed, yet guide his/her child to work as independently as possible
  • Encourage your child to read directions aloud,
  • Teach your child to underline action verbs and/or highlight key words and/or phrases to help reduce confusion and increase understanding of directions and concepts.
  • Check for understanding: ask your child to rephrase (not repeat) what he just read.
  • Teach your child to ask him/herself questions about what he/she reads.
  • Watch your child as s/he begins a task to see that s/he understands.
  • Be available if/when your child has questions.
