A mind map is a visual organizer, with a key word or phrase in the middle and related words and ideas surrounding the key word, connected by lines. Anyone can create a word map of any topic with a piece of paper and a pencil. Mind mapping has been around for a long time and has functioned as a useful tool for business people and learners of all ages for many purposes.
I began using mind maps with students years ago, in elementary science classes, to record what students knew about a topic before beginning a new unit of study or to quickly generate observations, questions and discoveries about an experience or investigation, and later, to summarize our findings. Over time, I found myself using this visual method of recording thoughts, ideas and questions to organize my thinking before a meeting, to plan a lesson, or to help children to plan a project, or to help a child to write a paragraph. How does your child prefer to organize information and ideas before beginning a writing project? Does s/he use a linear outline? Does s/he use a graphic organizer?
Schools are moving away from linear organization methods to using visual organizers and mindmapping or visually brainstorming and diagramming information and ideas. Some may reason that a visual outline is more like the way students think and that linear methods do not support the way today’s learners think. Still others may make a connection between increased access to technology and/or a new emphasis on incorporating more right-brain learning options into the schools due to an emphasis on 21st Century Learning skills. There’s a good chance that all of the above reasons can help explain the increased use of visual learning tools such as Visuwords.
Using Delicious to bookmark new learning tools that I want to incorporate into my tutoring practice has been a new personal goal, now that school is out.
